Extracurricular Activities

Education is not limited to the classroom experience; it is derived from all opportunities that contribute in any way toward personal and social growth. Therefore, St. Columban School offers a wide range of extracurricular activities. With every privilege, though, there is a corresponding responsibility. Students must maintain academic and conduct standards in order to be eligible for participation in extracurricular activities. The eligibility requirements are outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook.

After-School Programs: A variety of enrichment classes are offered after school for students of all grade levels. Programs are based upon the requests and interest of students and have included Lego Robotics, Kidz Art, Better Babysitters, and Pottery to name a few. Fees are assessed for these programs.

Band: Beginning band is offered to fourth graders once a week prior to the start of the school day. Advanced band is offered to students in grades five through eight once per week prior to the start of the school day.

Book Fairs: Each year the Library sponsors two book fairs, one in the Fall and the other in the Spring. Students can purchase books to read at home, or choose a book from an individual teacher's "wish list" to donate to their classrooms.

Boy Scouts: Membership in a Cub Scout or Boy Scout troop is open to any boy attending St. Columban School. Contact the school office for information.

Drama Club: A new drama club was formed in the 2005-2006 school year for students in grades 3-8. The club meets after school for rehearsals. This past year, the Drama Club presented "Mulan, Jr." in the spring.

Everybody Counts Program: Every year the PTO sponsors a special presentation for St. Columban students to further their understanding and awareness about special needs (e.g. visual impairment, developmental disabilities, chronic conditions, etc.) Each grade focuses on an age-appropriate condition and participates in an interactive mini-workshop conducted by trained parent volunteers.

Girl Scouts: Membership in a Girl Scout troop is open to any girl attending St. Columban School. Call the school office for information regarding the Girl Scout Coordinator for St. Columban.

Golf Team: Boys and girls in grades 6, 7, & 8 are invited to participate on the Bobcat Golf Team each fall to learn how to play golf and enjoy some friendly competition. There are two teams to accommodate both the beginner and the experienced golfer. All golf activities for both teams are directed by a PGA Master Professional. A fee is assessed for participation.

Junior High Service Club: The ACTION group is under the direction of the parish Youth Ministry program. Contact the parish offices for more information.

Liturgical Ministries: See the listings under the Spiritual tab.

Math Counts: Math Counts is a nationwide math enrichment program for middle school students. At St. Columban, students in grades 7 and 8 meet for practice and coaching after school for several months to prepare for individual or team competitions. Winners at the local level are eligible to proceed to state competitions.

Sports: The St. Columban Boosters sponsors girls' and boys' sports teams for children in the school and parish. See the Boosters website for information about football, cheerleading, girls' and boys' basketball, girls' and boys' volleyball, and track. You can access the Boosters website on our site or the parish site.

Student Council: Students in grades 6 through 8 are eligible to be members of the St. Columban School Student Council. This active organization assumes leadership for many student activities, including a Mission Drive and 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Members also assist in organizing service projects and a Veteran's Day celebration at Veterans' Memorial Park in Loveland.

First Lego League: www.stcolumbanrobotics.org
St. Columban students in grades 4-8 can join a First Lego League team to develop skills in engineering, computer programming, problem solving, researching, and teamwork while having loads of fun. Teams work to build and program a robot to complete a number of tasks on a competition table. During competitions, teams meet with Robot Design Judges, Project Judges, and Teamwork Judges. Each year a new challenge is announced in September, with competitions held from November through January. (www.usfirst.org)
