St. Columban School Handbook
Attendance: Attendance is kept for each child and recorded on his/her permanent record card. Attendance is marked according to the following policies:
Tardy: A child who arrives after 8:25 A.M. but before 9:25 A.M. will be marked as tardy. A child may also be marked as tardy if he/she leaves between 2:00 and 3:00 P.M.
Half-day Absence: &A child who is absent for more than one hour but less than three hours will be marked as absent for ½ day.
Full-day Absence: If a child misses more than three hours of the school day, this is considered a full day absence. If a child arrives after 11:30 A.M., he/she is considered to be out for a full day.
Discipline Policies: Ohio House bill 276 specifically prohibits cyberbullying, which is defined as "repetitive and hostile behavior with the intent to harm others through the use of information and communication technologies and other Web-based/online sites. Bullying conduct will warrant a consequence, ranging from automatic detention to expulsion, dependent upon the severity of the behavior.
Dismissal Policies: For safety reasons, no child will be dismissed from the school office between 2:45 and 3:10 P.M. If it is necessary to get your child from school before the end of the school day, please plan to be here before 2:45 P.M. In the event that you cannot get here before 2:45, you will be asked to wait until 3:10 P.M. for dismissal, at which point you can sign your child out in the cafeteria.
Transportation Changes: Any change to the normal means of transportation, i.e. a child will be a car rider instead of a bus rider, needs to be reported in the morning via a note to the homeroom teacher. For emergency situations only, notifications can be made to the school office via e-mail or a phone call before 2:00 P.M.
Attendance and Unexcused Absences: The following statements have been added to the Parent-Student Handbook in order to clarify policies regarding attendance records and early dismissals.
Attendance:
1. In the event that a student arrives late or leaves early, his absence will be marked according to the length of time that he/she is absent from school. A "tardy" will be recorded for missed school time up to one (1) hour. A "half-day absence" will be recorded for missed school time that exceeds one (1) hour but is less than three (3) hours. A "full-day absence" will be recorded for missed school time that exceeds three (3) hours.
2. Parents who need to pick up a student for appointments, illness, or other reasons must come to the office, sign the student out, and wait there while the student is called to the office. The child will not be called to the office until the parent arrives. For safety reasons, no student is to be dismissed from the office between 2:45 and 3:10 P.M. For early dismissal, please arrive prior to 2:45 P.M.
Unexcused Absences: Absences and tardies will be recorded as excused, unexcused, or vacation. The "excused" designation is given for illnesses, doctor's appointments, a death in the family, funerals, or "Take Your Child to Work Day." The "vacation" designation is used for any out-of-town travel. The "unexcused" designation is given for all other absences and tardies, including personal or family events.. Any of the above designations will appear on the student's report card and will affect perfect attendance.
Dress Code: St. Columban School has adopted the following uniform changes for the 2007-2008 school year.
1. Grade 5-8 girls may choose to wear either the plaid uniform culottes or the plaid uniform skirt. The skirt/culottes must be from the uniform company and must be of appropriate length, measuring no more than three inches from the floor when kneeling. Grade 1-4 girls will continue to wear the plaid jumper.
2. Grade 1-8 girls may wear navy blue leggings/tights with the uniform jumper, culottes, or skirt.
3. All students in grades 1-8 may wear a hunter green fleece vest with the St. Columban logo. These are available through the uniform company, Campus Outfitters.
