Terrace Metrics Assessments

Good afternoon, St. Columban parents (grades 3-8), As we begin this new school year, we want to continue prioritizing the well-being of all our students and working towards our goal of building a positive school culture that creates a healthy and safe environment for learning for all of our students. We know part of this entails proactively teaching our students God’s design for friendship and kindness. As you may recall, Terrace Metrics is a tool that we have utilized to help us progress toward this goal.

Your child will have the opportunity to participate in the fall and spring administrations of the Terrace Metrics Resiliency Survey. We will begin the fall administration on Wednesday, September 27th, starting with 5th and 8th-grade students. Please be advised this is a tentative start date and may be subject to change. Please refer to our weekly newsletters for upcoming administration dates for students in grades 3-8.

Terrace Metrics data provide us with the ability to design, implement, and evaluate small group interventions and individualized supports that address specific student needs, as well as opportunities for students to enhance their personal strengths. Most importantly, the data allow us to examine the needs of the WHOLE STUDENT, in combination with academic and other non-cognitive data.

What is Terrace Metrics? -Terrace Metrics is a comprehensive skills assessment for students in grades 3-8 that measures risk and resiliency factors that impact academic success. Measuring both types of factors is crucial, as the presence of even one risk indicator can reduce academic performance by 20%. However, one protective or resiliency factor can greatly reduce those risk factors. The Terrace Metrics Response Team uses the data to confidentially monitor and respond to student needs with interventions that strive to nurture resilience factors in our students and our school.

Attached you will find two documents.

(1) Please refer to the first attachment, Parent/Guardian Notification of Participation in the St. ColumbanSchool Resiliency Poll (with included Terrace Metrics Parent Opt Out of Passive Consent Form), for more detailed information regarding the purpose of this service.

“Parent Opt Out of Passive Consent” means only students who have NOT opted out have parent passive consent to participate in the assessment. In other words, if you DO NOT wish for your child to participate, you must SIGN THIS FORM and return it to school by Friday, September 15th.

(2) The final attached document, Research Summaries, includes a summary of various research studies demonstrating the links between mental health/social-emotional competence and academic achievement for your reference.

Sincerely,
